SUBSTANCE: cassette assembly system for a surgical stapler includes a cassette with staples, a stop and an expander. The limiter comprises the first plate and the second plate that are connected by a connector. The first limiter plate is rotatable relative to the second plate around the connector. The first biocompatible removable layer is attached to the cassette body and to the first limiter plate. The second biocompatible removable layer is attached to the second limiter plate. The first biocompatible layer and the second biocompatible layer are designed to be grasped within the staples and to accept different heights within the different staples in the compressed state. The expander is located between the first limiter plate and the second limiter plate and is movable between the first position and the second position. Moving the expander from the first position to the second position causes the first limiter plate and the second limiter plate to turn away from each other.
