SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane (HCC-240fa), from carbon tetrachloride and alkene, wherein the resulting by-products CCl4 are minimized during the start-up phase of the reaction. The method includes the step of reacting with an iron metal catalyst and one or more organophosphorus compounds as a co-catalyst and a step, in which FeCl3 reacting after the start-up phase of the process and producing an amount of the haloalkane compound; wherein the alkene is selected from the group consisting of vinyl chloride, ethylene and 2-chloropropene, and halogenoalkane compounds are selected from the group consisting of HCC-240fa, HCC-250 and HCC-360, and in which _FeCl3 is introduced into the reactor after the halogenoalkane compound content in the reactor reaches, at least, 35 wt.%.
