FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a highly selective method for producing 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, including providing a reaction mixture containing ethene, carbon tetrachloride and a metal catalyst containing alkyl phosphate in the main alkylation zone to form 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane in the reaction mixture, and extracting part of the reaction mixture from the main alkylation zone. According to the invention, the conversion in the reaction is maintained at a level of less than 95% by continuous distillation of a mixture of 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and a catalyst from the reaction mixture; and this mixture is sent back to the reaction mixture located in the main alkylation zone; and the reaction mixture extracted from the main alkylation zone is subjected to an aqueous work up stage, at which the reaction mixture is brought into contact with the aqueous medium in the aqueous work up zone to form a two-phase mixture; and an organic phase containing a catalyst is isolated from the two-phase mixture.
EFFECT: invention also relates to a composition of 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane, suitable as a feedstock in the synthesis of a halogenated alkene or a halogenated alkane.
