FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to catalyst arrangement for production of phthalic anhydride by oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons in the gas phase and to process for producing phthalic anhydride. Catalyst arrangement comprises a reactor with a gas inlet side for feed gas, with the gas outlet side for the produced gas, the first catalyst bed from the catalyst bodies, and at least one second catalyst bed from the catalyst bodies, wherein the first catalyst bed is located on the gas inlet side, the second catalyst layer is located downstream of the first catalyst bed in the direction of the gas stream, wherein the length of the first catalyst bed in the direction of the gas flow is less than the length of the second catalyst bed in the gas flow direction. First catalyst bed has a higher porosity than second catalyst bed.

EFFECT: increased yield of phthalic anhydride and production of crude phthalic anhydride having a relatively high purity.
