FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of benzoic acid by oxidation of toluene, the oxidation being conducted with manganese dioxide in an aqueous 35–45 % solution of perchloric acid at a temperature of 70–90 °C in the dosage of toluene in the reaction mixture.
EFFECT: proposed method allows expanding the raw material base, significantly reducing the time of the process, increasing the yield of the target compound and avoiding the formation of by-products.
