SUBSTANCE: invention relates to fermented nutritional composition for infants and young children or pregnant women. Proposed use of dairy product, fermented by bacteria producing lactic acid, or fermented dairy product containing lactic acid and/or lactate to produce a nutritional composition for preventing anemia and/or iron deficiency, increasing absorption, bio-accessibility and bio-availability of iron for human subjects, as well as for improving motor skills, cognitive and/or socio-emotional development of infants and/or young children. Nutritional composition contains from 0.1 to 1.5 wt % of the sum of lactic acid and lactate in the dry weight of the nutritional composition and/or 0.01 to 0.20 g of lactic acid and/or lactate in a total of 100 ml of the composition, as well as at least 0.2 g per 100 ml of the composition and/or at least 1.0 wt % of the dry weight of the composition, at least one non-digestible oligosaccharide and iron of 0.4 to 0.7 mg per 100 ml of the composition and/or 0.03 to 0.055 mg per g of dry weight of the nutritional composition. In the case where the iron source is iron lactate, the composition contains 0.1 to 1.6 wt % lactic acid and/or lactate and/or 0.01 to 0.21 g/L of lactic acid and/or lactate per 100 ml of the nutritional composition, wherein the amount of L-lactic acid and L-lactate is more than 50 wt % of lactic acid and lactate in total.
