FIELD: optics.

SUBSTANCE: varifocal liquid lens is a drop of liquid absorbing radiation in the droplet volume and sitting on a solid transparent substrate. Adjustment of the focal length of the droplet is due to a change in the curvature of its free surface due to the thermal action of the laser beam on the drop. Liquid is non-volatile and, in the absence of laser radiation, the liquid drop is a collecting lens. Curvature of the droplet surface varies under the action of thermocapillary forces excited by the thermal action of the laser beam on the droplet, and the magnitude and sign of the curvature and focal length are determined by the power of the laser beam.

EFFECT: simplification of the focal length control, widening of the range of the focal length change in the modes of the collecting and scattering lens, expansion of the range of applied liquids and increase of reliability of the varifocal lens operation.
