FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of a polymer composition having a kinematic viscosity of less than 25 mm2/s, measured at 100°C according to ASTM D 445. Method involves following steps: (a) preparing a reaction mixture comprising as component A) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer or a mixture of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and as component B) a 1-alkene or a mixture of 1-alkenes; (b) adding a Co(ll) complex as a catalytic chain transfer agent to the reaction mixture; (c) adding a radical initiator; and (d) reacting the reaction mixture to obtain the polymer composition, wherein the total amount of the radical initiator added to the reaction mixture is 0.05-3.5% by weight relative to the total weight of components A) and B). Component A) is a compound of formula (I) or a mixture of compounds of formula (I)

in which R1 and R2 independently represent a hydrogen atom or a group of the formula -COOR5, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R4 is an alkyl group containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group containing from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, an alkynyl group having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, or a cycloalkyl group, containing from 3 to 30 carbon atoms, and R5 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms, or an alkynyl group having from 2 to 30 carbon atoms. Polymer composition, its use, a lubricating base fluid and the use of the Co(II) complex are also disclosed.

EFFECT: invention enables to obtain low viscosity polymers from ethylenically unsaturated monomers.
