FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to raw material for the direct reduction of iron in a shaft furnace, a method of its production and a method for producing direct reduction iron. Raw material contains the product of processing of iron ore in the form of lumpy iron ore, sintered pieces of ore, pellets or briquettes, having a layer of porous coating with a porosity of 20 to 50 % and containing at least one of Ca oxide or Mg oxide. Method for producing the raw material comprises applying to the iron ore processing product a coating in the form of a suspension comprising at least calcium hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide, or cement hydrate, evaporation of moisture using CO2-free gas and removal of chemically bound water at a dehydration temperature or higher using a gas not containing steam H2O. In the production of direct reduction iron, the obtained raw material is loaded into a shaft furnace at a temperature higher than room temperature, and reduced in the shaft furnace using a reducing gas containing hydrogen.

EFFECT: invention is aimed at suppressing the accumulation of raw material and softening of pellets during reduction.
