SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the isolation of phytosterols from tall pitch that consists in saponification of tall pitch with alkali in a polyhydric alcohol, extraction from an alkaline alcohol solution of unsaponified substances with a hydrocarbon solvent followed by removal of the solvent by distillation, concentration of phytosterols, while a mixture of paraffinic hydrocarbons with a number of carbon atoms of 8 to 17 is used as the hydrocarbon solvent, after extraction from the extract solution, betulin is isolated by crystallization at a temperature of 50 to 83 °C, and the phytosterols are subsequently concentrated by rectification.

EFFECT: method makes it possible to increase the degree of extraction of phytosterols from saponified tallow pitch to 95 %, to obtain a final product with a phytosterol content of at least 65 %, the undesirable admixture of betulin is no more than 0,3 %.
