SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to magnetic resonance imaging. Magnet assembly for a magnetic resonance imaging system comprises an actively shielded magnetic gradient coil operable for generating a magnetic field, wherein the magnetic field has a cylindrical axis of symmetry, wherein the gradient coil has a length parallel with the cylindrical axis of symmetry, wherein the magnetic gradient coil has an outer surface, the magnetic field comprises an external magnetic field outside of the outer surface, and wherein the external field has at least four reduced field regions along the length where the modulus of the magnetic field is less than the average of the modulus of the magnetic field along the length.

EFFECT: technical result is an increase in the efficiency of the gradient coil.
