FIELD: technological processes.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the chemical-thermal treatment of metals in a glow discharge plasma and can be used in engineering for face hardening of machine parts and a cutting tool. Device for nitriding a steel part in the glow discharge plasma comprises a vacuum chamber, a power source, a workpiece in the form of a cathode part, screen in the form of a grid, installed at a distance from the cathode part and a device for gas supply. Power source is made adjustable, the cathode part is connected to the negative pole of the regulated power source, and the screen is connected to the cathode part and is made in the form of a grid with cylindrical cells. Length L of said cylindrical screen cell, the distance X from the screen to the cathode part and the diameter d of said cylindrical screen cell have the following relationship (L+X)/d=2.5.
EFFECT: increase in the microhardness of a nitrided coating and its uniformity are provided.
