FIELD: meter reading.

SUBSTANCE: proposed group of inventions refers to means for reading the data of mechanical indicators of meter reading devices. Claimed method for electronically reading data of an indicator comprising mechanically movable display elements providing or displaying machine-readable codes, herewith the method comprising: receiving read data from an optical reading device that comprises a linear block of photosensors located or aligned with the indicator display elements, at that the read data comprises an electrical signal or associated information coupled with computer readable codes read by the reader, herewith the machine-readable codes are provided or displayed by all or most of the indicator display elements and at the same time the machine-readable codes are non-letter-numeric machine-readable codes that correspond to numeric or alphanumeric values or symbols that are associated with display elements or are displayed by the display elements in addition to machine-readable codes; and processing the received read data to obtain each symbol associated with the machine readable code provided or displayed by each display element, and combining the received symbols in the order corresponding to the positions of the respective movable indicator display elements to obtain indications or a string of symbols displayed or associated with the indication of the indicator, and obtaining a value associated with the combined received symbols in the order corresponding to the positions of the respective mobile indicator display elements. Second version of this method and a corresponding reading system are also implemented.

EFFECT: suggested group of inventions allows to read the data with a ruler from the photosensors independently from each separate display element.
