FIELD: pharmaceuticals.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the pharmaceutical industry, namely to the method of carotenoids and chlorophylls separating. A method for separating carotenoids and chlorophylls from an extract of plant material by sequential use of two extractants, dissolving the lipophilic extract of the Urtica dioica leaves evaporated to 1–2 ml in 25 ml of petroleum ether and shaking until the pigments are completely dissolved, then add 25 ml of ethyl alcohol 95 % to the solution of the pigments in petroleum ether, shake the mixture for 30 minutes, then separate the alcohol phase containing xanthophylls and chlorophylls from the petroleum ether phase, containing carotenes and traces of chlorophylls; add 25 ml of petroleum ether to an alcohol phase containing chlorophylls and xanthophylls for the separation of chlorophylls, shake the solution for 30 minutes, the less polar chlorophylls being extracted into petroleum ether, separate the phases; to remove traces of chlorophylls from the petroleum ether phase, they are separated by saponification by adding to the phase a petroleum ether containing carotenes and traces of chlorophylls, 10 ml of sodium hydrochloride solution 20 % and 25 ml of ethyl alcohol 95 %, shaking for 30 minutes, separating the alcohol phase containing saponified chlorophyll.

EFFECT: above-described method allows efficient separation of carotenoids and chlorophylls from plant extracts.
