FIELD: measurement; test.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to automatically identifying obstacles for rail vehicles. Device comprises a force measuring device which generates a collision force measuring signal in the event of a collision between a collision beam of the rail vehicle and a mass of the collision object, collision force measuring signal is directed to an evaluation device together with a rail vehicle speed signal. Evaluation device is designed to integrate the collision force measuring signal by means of an integrator and by using the rail vehicle speed signal, to determine the mass of the collision object, and the integration of the collision force measuring signal is a time-limited or time-unlimited integration.
EFFECT: more reliable indication of the mass of the collision object for controlling the braking of a rail vehicle is achieved.
