SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the manufacture of a piston ring made of cast iron or cast steel. Body of a piston ring is formed on which at least one PVD coating of variable thickness is applied on the outer periphery such that it has a greater thickness in the vicinity of the joint end of the piston ring than the remaining outer peripheral zone of the body of the piston ring. Body of the piston ring is processed so that in the cold state at the end of the piston ring, which is close to the joint, it has no radial pressure. Variable thickness of the PVD coating is applied such that at a temperature of the piston ring greater than 150 °C there is a uniform distribution of radial pressure along the entire outer periphery of the piston ring.

EFFECT: resulting in a longer service life of the piston ring.
