SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to agriculture. Machine comprises unit (36) for horizontally cutting the head of the roots, said unit having a means for automatically adjusting the level of its cutting blade depending on the level of said head, and being followed by harvesting unit (48) that hollows out the earth beneath the roots at a relative height beneath the cutting level. Machine further includes means for detecting the height of the top of the root and a means for adjusting the relative height of harvesting unit (48) with respect to the cutting level, depending on said height. Method of operating the harvesting machine comprises steps of determining the height of the top of the root and then adjusting the relative height of harvesting unit (48) with respect to the cutting level, depending on said height.
EFFECT: providing optimum soil digging, which enables to reduce fuel consumption due to shallower digging when the beet is located high, and reduced likelihood of damage to roots due to deeper digging, when the beets are deep.
