SUBSTANCE: invention relates to electrical equipment. Technical result is achieved due to the fact that the method comprises the step of measuring a DC bias voltage Ud having a polarity and a value, step of determining whether there is a short-circuit fault by comparing the DC bias voltage Ud with the bias threshold voltage Ut and a step of identifying the type of the fault based on the polarity and the value of the DC bias voltage Ud. Device for providing the method comprises a transducer having a positive pole and a negative pole, substation DC-switch, DC-line connecting the converter and DC-switch substation, and a transient fault detector. Transient fault detector comprises a positive voltage sensor measuring a positive voltage transient voltage Up, and a negative voltage sensor measuring the negative voltage transient voltage Un of the negative pole, and a control unit that is configured to derive a DC bias voltage Ud from the positive Up and negative Un transient voltages.
EFFECT: ensuring the selective operation of the network.
