SUBSTANCE: invention relates to interface (1) for communicating with and for controlling the operation of an apparatus for automatically distributing a sanitary sheet material. Interface (1) contains user sensor (2) having a sensing area for detecting the presence of a user within the sensing region, at least one indicator (4, 5, 6, 13) for displaying the setting or status of the device operating parameter for distribution, and main microcontroller (48). Interface (1), further comprising at least one additional sensor (3, 12) for controlling at least one operating parameter of the distribution device or for activating at least one function of the distribution device, and protective cover (7) containing at least one graphic symbol or text. At least one additional sensor (3, 12), at least one indicator (4, 5, 6, 13) and main microcontroller (48) are located on main printed wiring board (8). Main printed circuit board (8) is located behind protective cover (7) and is thus positioned relative to at least one graphic symbol or text, at least one graphic symbol or text overlaps at least one additional sensor (3, 12) or at least one indicator (4, 5, 6, 13). Main microcontroller (48) is for selectively activating the distribution device in any of at least user settings and service settings.
