SUBSTANCE: apparatus comprises a roll of tubular film, a conveyor device for drawing film from the roll for a predetermined length, a cutting device for cutting drawn film to form a tubular sheath and a device disposed downstream from the cutting device in the film transporting direction for pulling the tubular cover onto a stack of loose items. Said device has an outlet device that makes it possible to release a length of the film and is configured to hold a length of the film over the reception area for a stack of loose items and for transporting this length from the device in the transverse direction. Also, the invention provides a method for replacing a roll of film in the above-described device.
