SUBSTANCE: invention relates to drilling of proximal wells and can be used to determine the distance between them. In particular, there is provided a method for determining the distance between a reference well and a measured well, according to which: generating a downhole current through the current input circuit, the current input circuit creating the first magnetic field; take the reverse current through a return circuit, return circuit creating a second magnetic field, the first and second magnetic fields being unbalanced relative to each other; and the first and second magnetic fields are measured. Method further includes measuring the total magnetic fields based on said first and second magnetic fields, as well as determination, based on the total magnetic field, of the relative distance and direction of the measured well relative to the reference well. System for implementing this method is also disclosed.

EFFECT: technical result is expansion of the range of technical means for determining the distance between the proximal wells.
