SUBSTANCE: method and article may operate to receive a first signal from a first magnetometer partially situated on a Helmholtz coil, obtain a second signal from a second magnetometer having sensitivity which is one thousand times less than that of the first magnetometer, process the second signal to determine an excitation signal which activates the Helmholtz coil, which uses the excitation signal to nullify the Earth's magnetic field surrounding the first magnetometer, and process the first signal, which is a well location signal or a well telemetry signal, wherein the range to an underground object is determined from the location signal and data on drilling operations in a well are obtained from the telemetry signal.
EFFECT: enabling suppression of part of the ambient magnetic field and high sensitivity of magnetic field measurements.
