FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to inorganic chemistry. In order to obtain a reinforced airgel composition: a) precursor solution containing precursor materials of silica gel and a solvent is prepared; b) combining the precursor solution with the reinforcing material; c) transferring the silica gel precursor in solution to the gel composition to form a reinforced silica-based gel composition; d) recovering a portion of the solvent from the reinforced gel composition to produce a first reinforced airgel composition; e) exposing the first reinforced aerogel composition for heat treatment in an atmosphere with a reduced oxygen content at a temperature above 300 °C to obtain a second reinforced airgel composition. Additionally, hydrophobically bonded silicon is introduced into the first reinforced airgel composition prior to step d).
EFFECT: increase in hydrophobicity, absorption of liquid water, heat of combustion or the temperature of the onset of thermal decomposition of the airgel composition is provided.
