FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to medicine, specifically to a surgical stapler. Instrument comprises: (a) handle assembly; (b) a shaft extending distally from the handle assembly, the shaft having a proximal end and a distal end, (c) a stapling assembly, wherein the stapling assembly is disposed at the distal end of the shaft, the stapling assembly being selectively movable from an open position to a closed position, and wherein the stapling assembly is configured to eject a plurality of staples into the tissue. Instrument also comprises (d) a motor; (e) a cam assembly connected to the motor, the motor being rotatably driven to rotate the cam assembly; and (f) a firing assembly connected to the cam assembly. Cam assembly is configured to drive the distal portion of the firing assembly to a range of distal movement with a variable longitudinal force profile such that the cam assembly is configured to provide a variable gear ratio for the distal portion of the firing assembly throughout the range of the distal movement. Cam assembly comprises a first cam and a second cam, the first cam and the second cam having different cam profiles, wherein the firing assembly comprises a rotary member rotatably connected to the handle assembly, the first portion of the rotary member being connected to the first cam and the second portion of the rotary member being connected to the second cam and the third portion of the rotary member being engaged with the firing assembly, the cam assembly being rotatable, so as to cause the rotary member to rotate, and wherein the rotary member is rotatable so as to provide a variable gear ratio for the distal portion of the firing assembly.
EFFECT: invention improves the efficiency and reliability of the surgical stapler.
