FIELD: medicine.

SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medicine, specifically to surgical stapling instruments. Apparatus comprises: (a) a body; (b) an end effector extending distally from the body, the end effector comprising a stapling assembly operable to drive staples into tissue; and (c) a control system in communication with the end effector. Control system comprises: (i) a motor configured to actuate the stapling assembly; (ii) a firing trigger; (iii) a switch assembly comprising a switch in communication with the motor; (iv) a movable member pivotable about an axis, wherein the firing trigger is configured to actuate the movable member in a first angular displacement range; and (v) a resilient member in engagement with the movable member, the resilient member being configured to actuate the movable member in a second angular displacement range, wherein the firing trigger and the resilient member are configured to cooperate to move the movable member into engagement with the switch to activate the motor. Apparatus may also comprise a resilient member in engagement with the movable member, wherein the firing trigger is movable in a first direction to move the movable member, wherein the movable member is configured to actuate the switch assembly in response to movement of the movable member by the trigger, wherein the firing trigger is pivotable, wherein the resilient member is configured to connect the movable member to the firing trigger so that the movable member is moved to the switch assembly when the firing trigger is rotated, wherein the firing trigger and the resilient member are configured to cooperate to move the movable member into engagement with the switch for activating the motor, wherein the movable member is further configured such that the movable member holds the firing trigger in a rotated position after the rotation of the firing trigger.
