FIELD: machine building.

SUBSTANCE: systems for detecting a user's approach to a vehicle have been proposed. Said system includes a convenience controller that activates a small zone high location precision welcoming detecting function (with high current utilization) in response to a detected arrival of an authorized user into a larger zone low location precision welcoming detecting function (with low current utilization). A short-range transmitter broadcasts the polling signal covering a specific area. Said short-range transmitter has an approach pending mode in which the polling signal is broadcast according to a first predetermined pulse repetition rate, and a baseline mode in which the polling signal is broadcast according to a lower pulse repetition rate. Said short-range transmitter has the first power consumption level in the approach pending mode. And a wireless communication system is configured to monitor user’s activities outside the approach region corresponding to a possible user entry in the approach region, wherein during such monitoring the wireless communication system operates at a lower power consumption level. If a certain activity of the user is detected during the operation of the short-range transmitter in the baseline mode, the short-range transmitter switches into the approach pending mode.

EFFECT: passive detection of a user approaching the vehicle in a certain approach zone is achieved without significantly increasing the overall average discharge value of the battery.
