FIELD: technological processes.

SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for steam reforming hydrocarbons to produce synthesis gas and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. Apparatus for steam reforming hydrocarbons is disclosed, comprising a steam reformer comprising a plurality of externally-heated vertical tubes, each tube having an inlet for a feed gas mixture comprising hydrocarbon and steam, and an outlet for a reformed gas mixture, wherein the tubes contain a particulate steam reforming catalyst adjacent the outlet, and a structured steam reforming catalyst adjacent the inlet. Method for steam reforming hydrocarbons using said apparatus is also described.

EFFECT: creating a compact apparatus for steam reforming hydrocarbons and reducing undesirable overheating of the walls of the reaction tube.
