FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a catalyst composition for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene or toluene, with aliphatic alcohols containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, containing: MTW type zeolite type, alkali metals, which are a mixture of sodium ions and potassium ions, the amount of sodium ranging from 5 to 40 parts per million, the amount of potassium ranging from 5 to 80 parts per million, the total amount of alkali metals in the catalyst composition is less than 200 parts per million (0.02 wt. %) relative to the total weight of the catalyst composition and the molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 in said MTW type zeolite ranges from 20 to 95. Also described is a method for alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as benzene or toluene, in the presence of such a catalyst composition.
EFFECT: technical result is the development of a catalyst composition with a low content of alkali metal cations, which has optimal characteristics and service life and, as a result, performance, providing reduced formation of aldehydes or ketones, corresponding to the alcohols used, thereby minimising the formation of reaction by-products from said aldehydes or ketones having a boiling point very close to the boiling point of the polyalkylation products, which provides a significant advantage at the subsequent transalkylation stage.
