FIELD: medicine.
SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to medicine and can be used to improve the healing of chronic tympanic membrane perforation in an individual. For this purpose, the method comprises contacting a site of chronic tympanic membrane perforation with a formulation comprising an effective dose of an agent that provides heparin binding epidermal growth factor (HB-EGF) activity, which is human HB-EGF. Contacting of the formulation takes place over a period of time sufficient to substantially close the perforation. Also provided are a pharmaceutical composition and the use of the composition in the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of chronic tympanic membrane perforation.
EFFECT: group of inventions provides effective treatment of chronic tympanic membrane perforation without tympanoplasty.
