SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of breaking down formates in mixtures of substances containing formates, including the conversion of mixtures of substances containing formates, in the presence of at least one heterogeneous catalyst which contains lanthanum, at a temperature of 80 to 180 °C and pressure from 0.1 to 60 bar, where these mixtures of substances containing formates have pH of 6.5 to 10, the catalyst is a lanthanum oxide / copper / copper oxide / alumina catalyst, which contains from 4 to 15 wt. % lanthanum, calculated as La2O3, in terms of the total weight of the catalyst, the mixture of substances containing formates contains carbonyl compounds, which are formed as a result of the aldol reaction of alkanals with formaldehyde, and / or corresponding hydrogenation products thereof, and at least 50 wt. % formates break down. Invention also relates to the use of at least one heterogeneous lanthanum-containing catalyst for breaking down formates from mixtures of substances containing formates, having a pH from 6.5 to 10, at a temperature of 80 to 180 °C and pressure from 0.1 to 60 bar, where the catalyst is a lanthanum oxide / copper / copper oxide / alumina catalyst, which contains from 0.5 to 15 wt. % lanthanum, calculated as La2O3, in terms of the total weight of the catalyst, the mixture of substances containing formates contains carbonyl compounds, which are formed as a result of the aldol reaction of alkanals with formaldehyde, and / or corresponding hydrogenation products thereof, and at least 50 wt. % formates break down.
EFFECT: method of breaking down formates is disclosed.
