FIELD: measurement; testing.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the evaluation of the characteristics of hydrocarbon formations. In particular, a method is disclosed for evaluating formation characteristics, including: placing, in a borehole in a formation, an acoustic logging device, which includes a multi-electrode acoustic vibration generator and at least one multi-electrode acoustic vibration receiver; transmitting to the borehole acoustic signals generated by at least one acoustic volume wave propagating from the borehole to the far field zone of the formation; measuring reflected signals, including volume waves, reflected from reflecting boundaries in the far-field zone of the formation; determining the reflecting boundary in the formation and the reflection characteristics associated with the reflecting boundary; estimating at least the thickness or horizontal extent of the hydrocarbon formation based on reflected signals and reflection characteristics and estimating the concentration of hydrocarbons in the hydrocarbon formation based on the reflection characteristics.
EFFECT: technical result is to improve the accuracy of determining the concentration of hydrocarbons in a formation.
