FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to metallurgy. This method relates to measuring liquid metal surface level (13) and slag surface level (14) in crucible (1) of a metallurgical shaft furnace. At one or more points of external wall (2) of the crucible, the circumferential strain of external wall (2) is measured by means of number of strain-gauge sensors (6) fixed to armour (4) of external wall (2) of the crucible; and the temperature of external wall (2) through one or more temperature sensors (7) fixed to armour (4) of the external wall of the crucible. These variables measured at a number of points on the external wall of the crucible are introduced into the general equation governing the circumferential strain, the solution of which is analytical, and which contains two unknowns, namely the liquid metal level and the overall liquid metal and slag level, considering set parameters. Said equation is solved to obtain liquid metal surface level (13) and slag surface level (14) in crucible (1).

EFFECT: improvement of the measurement accuracy.
