FIELD: metallurgy.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the field of metalworking, and in particular to methods of applying wear-resistant high-temperature coatings to cutting tools made of high-speed steel or hard alloy. Method of applying a high-temperature coating on a cutting tool involves applying a refractory layer of metal nitrides to the surface of the cutting tool in the chamber of an ion-plasma unit and conducting microarc oxidation. Said refractory layer is applied with a thickness of 1–12 mcm from metal nitrides selected from the group comprising Al, Ti, Nb, Ta, Zr, Cr, Hf, V and their combinations. This microarc oxidation is then carried out at a nitride coating treatment temperature on the tool surface in the range of 1,000–5,000 °C to replace the mentioned nitrides with the oxide of the selected metal contained in the substituted nitrides, while ensuring the thickness of the oxide layer is in the range of 0.2–4.0 mcm.

EFFECT: improved performance of the cutting tool and its quality is ensured.
