SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in tool manufacturing when hardening cutting tools by deposition of self-sharpening coatings. The processed metal-cutting tool is placed in a vacuum chamber and its ion cleaning is performed in an inert gas environment, first using a plasma source with an incandescent cathode, and then using an electric arc evaporator. After cleaning, a layer of titanium is applied in an inert gas medium, and then the main wear-resistant layer is applied with simultaneous spraying of Ti and Al in nitrogen, oxygen and acetylene as reaction gases with the formation of a matrix of intermetallic phases TiAl, Ti3Al, TiAl3 and filler in the form of TIN, AlN, TiC, AlC, Ti2O, Al2O3.

EFFECT: invention makes it possible to increase the service life of a metal-cutting tool by improving its physical and mechanical properties, for example, adhesion between layers and reducing wear.
