SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method for extracting bitumen. Method includes step of treating oil sands with propylene oxide capped glycol ether. Surface mined oil sands are transported to a treatment area to carry out an oil sands treatment step with propylene oxide capped glycol ether, or when extracting bitumen in situ, the step of treating oil sands with propylene oxide capped glycol ether is performed in situ. Propylene oxide capped glycol ether has the following structural formula: RO-(C2H4O)n-CH2CH(CH3)OH, where R is a linear, branched, cyclic alkyl, phenyl or alkylphenyl group, and n is from 1 to 10.

EFFECT: invention increases the degree of extraction of bitumen from oil sands in a safe and economical way.
