SUBSTANCE: invention relates to the production of supporting structures, for example, such as skin panels of aircrafts. In the method, the apparatus contains a tool system configured to perform an operation at a location on a structure, a movement system configured to move the tool system along an elongated support element on the structure to the required location and an attachment system comprising a first guide element and a second guide element having two wheeled assemblies that are capable of coming into contact with the elongated support element, and a system for moving the second guide element with the possibility of its engagement and disengagement with the elongated support element.
