FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: use: to determine elemental composition of samples of solid or liquid materials. Summary of invention consists in the fact that device for determining elemental composition of samples of solid or liquid materials has a neutron block made with a receiving vessel for placing the analyzed sample of material and equipped with: (a) neutron generator for generating a stream of labeled neutrons and alpha particles, wherein the neutron generator has an alpha detector; (b) gamma-ray detectors for detecting spectra of characteristic gamma-radiation occurring when a sample of material is irradiated with a stream of labeled neutrons; (c) data analysis system for collecting and analyzing data obtained from alpha detector of neutron generator and gamma-ray detectors; and (d) biological protection of neutron block, providing safe operation of the working personnel, wherein data analysis system is configured to determine elemental composition of sample of material using only gamma-quanta falling in selected time interval of time spectrum of alpha-gamma match and corresponding to sample of material, and using the other portion of the alpha-gamma match time spectrum for energy calibration of the obtained gamma-ray spectra at each measurement of each sample. Also disclosed is a corresponding method implemented in the disclosed device.

EFFECT: technical result is enabling determination of concentration of elements in samples of large mass and large size without any sample preparation.
