FIELD: measuring.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to research or analysis of substances by radiation methods for determining the elemental composition of substances. Device for sorting used refractories comprises a storage bin, a conveyor, a forming device, a neutron module, including a neutron generator with a built-in alpha-particle detector and gamma-radiation detectors, a control cabinet containing a data collection system and a gamma-radiation detector power supply system, operator computer with software, comprising a data analysis system and a system for sorting refractories based on neural networks, trained to classify used refractories, sorting pushers moving used refractories according to sorting system signal into sorting bins. Also disclosed is a method of sorting used refractories using a device for sorting used refractories.

EFFECT: possibility of sorting used refractories beyond visual control due to high penetrating ability of fast marked neutrons, which enables to analyse the elemental composition of used refractories to a depth beyond the layer of oxides.
