FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to analytical chemistry, specifically to methods for determining authenticity (naturalness) and detecting falsification of ester cinnamon oils using mass spectrometry method of isotopic ratios. Method for identification and detection of firnification of ethereal cinnamon oils consists in the fact that gas chromatography-combustion/pyrolysis-isotopic mass spectrometry is used to determine isotope composition of carbon and hydrogen components of cinnamon essential oil (linalool, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, caryl phyllene, cinamyl acetate, benzyl benzoate), obtained results are presented in the form of isotopic profiles and compared with pre-established isotope profiles of carbon and hydrogen, characteristic for authentic cinnamon and cassia oil: at coincidence of profiles cinnamon oil sample is considered to be authentic, and in case of mismatch or loss of values of isotopic composition of carbon or hydrogen of one or several components from the profile, then it is falsified.

EFFECT: developed method will allow to determine authenticity of ester cinnamon oils and detect their falsification of different types: by adding components extracted from other plants, dilution with synthetic cinnamaldehyde or by substituting cinnamon essential oil with cheaper cassia oil while reducing the analysis time to 25 minutes and improving the reliability of the determination by analysing a large array of data for establishing isotope profiles of authentic cinnamon oils (34 samples).
