FIELD: turbines or turbomachines.
SUBSTANCE: gas turbine engine comprises a gas generator, a free turbine, a starter-generator rigidly connected to the intermediate shaft, and a device for spontaneous mechanical connection of the gas generator and the free turbine. Connection device comprises two idle gears, respectively connecting intermediate shaft with first shaft, having with gas generator reducing gear ratio K1, and with said second shaft, having low-ratio gear K2 with free turbine. Gears are arranged so that free turbine spontaneously drives gas generator through said shafts and idle gears as soon as said ratio of speeds becomes less than ratio K2 / K1. Other inventions of the group relate to a two-engined helicopter and a method of optimizing an ultra-low-gas mode, in which said gas-turbine engine is used.
EFFECT: group of inventions allows, without an external drive, to switch the gas turbine engine from a configuration in which the turbines are not connected to each other in a configuration in which the turbines are connected to each other.
