FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an improved method of producing aromatic carboxylic acids using an exothermic liquid-phase oxidation reaction of aromatic feed compounds, in which water is effectively extracted from an exothermic liquid-phase oxidation reaction and treated to reduce the amount of corrosive agents present therein. Continuous method of producing aromatic carboxylic acids involves (a) oxidising an aromatic feedstock to an aromatic carboxylic acid in a liquid-phase reaction mixture containing water, a low-molecular monobasic carboxylic acid solvent, oxidation catalyst based on heavy metal and a source of molecular oxygen, under reaction conditions, in which a gaseous high-pressure stream containing water is obtained from above, gaseous by-products and gaseous solvent – low-molecular monobasic carboxylic acid; (b) separating said high pressure bleed stream into a monobasic carboxylic acid enriched in a solvent, a first liquid phase and a second liquid phase enriched with water, containing dissolved oxygen and methyl bromide; and (c) reducing the amount of at least one of dissolved oxygen and methyl bromide in the second liquid phase to form a treated second liquid phase.
EFFECT: water is efficiently extracted from an exothermic liquid-phase oxidation reaction and treated to reduce the amount of corrosive agents present therein.
