SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods and systems for controlling power unit of a vehicle. Cruise control system for a vehicle comprises a controller configured to maintain vehicle speed about a predetermined value and reduce a predetermined value in response to a drop in predicted braking ability below a threshold based on predicted deceleration of braking efficiency and performing gear shifting of vehicle to lower gear to increase negative torque in order to reduce deceleration efficiency. In the vehicle power unit control method, reducing by the controller the vehicle speed preset value, vehicle friction brakes are used to reduce vehicle speed to preset value and gearbox is shifted to lower gear.

EFFECT: reduced braking efficiency reduction.
