SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to medicine, specifically to an apparatus for determining vital sign information from a subject and can be used for determine information about the respiratory rate of the subject. Apparatus is made to implement a method, wherein the apparatus comprises detection unit for detecting electromagnetic radiation from the field of view of an image capturing device and to determine a characteristic parameter, which includes information about the respiratory frequency of the subject from different areas of the field of view of the image capturing device; a frequency analysis unit for determining the spectral energy distribution of a characteristic parameter obtained from different areas; a selection unit for selecting at least one of the areas of the field of view of the image capturing device based on the spectral energy distribution, wherein the selection unit is configured to select at least one area of the field of view of the image capturing device if the spectral energy distribution of a given frequency band of the corresponding characteristic parameter exceeds a predetermined threshold level; and a computing unit for calculating respiration frequency information based on a characteristic parameter from at least one selected area.
EFFECT: invention provides improved reliability in relation to determining vital signs.
