SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to determining information on vital signs of a patient. Disclosed is a device for realizing the method, the device comprising: a detection device for detecting electromagnetic radiation received from a patient in the field of view of the detection device, a first determination unit for determining a first time-dependent plethysmography signal from radiation received from a patient, evaluation unit for obtaining at least one parameter from a first time-dependent plethysmography signal, wherein the evaluation unit comprises a frequency determining device or a demodulation unit for determining frequency from the first time-dependent plethysmography signal at least as one parameter, wherein the demodulation unit is a frequency or amplitude demodulation unit for demodulating a first time-dependent plethysmography signal as a frequency-modulated signal; a selection unit for selecting an area in the field of view based on the detected radiation and at least one parameter, wherein the selection unit is configured to determine a plurality of variable signals (S) containing information on the respiratory frequency or other vital signs of the patient from different field regions view of detection device, and in which the selection unit is configured to select an area for determining a second time-dependent signal based on the variable signals (S), wherein selection unit comprises frequency analysis device for frequency analysis of variable signals; second determination unit for determining a second time-dependent signal from radiation received from the selected region, an analysis unit for analyzing a second time-dependent signal and for determining information (R) on vital signs based on analyzing a second time-dependent signal.
