FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of reducing production of titanium dioxide by sulphate technology. Acid decomposition of the iron titanium raw material in sulphuric acid is carried out with formation of an acid decomposition suspension. Sludge is separated to form an acid decomposition solution containing tetravalent titanium and trivalent iron. Solution is reduced using metal iron refined from impurities in a reduction reactor while controlling the degree of reduction until content of trivalent titanium, in terms of total amount of titanium, reaches value of 1 to 5 wt. % in said acid decomposition solution. Crystallization and separation of ferrous sulphate from the reconstituted acid decomposition solution is carried out, followed by hydrolysis and calcination of the hydrolysis product to obtain titanium dioxide. Ferric iron is completely reduced to divalent iron, and tetravalent titanium is selectively and partially reduced to trivalent titanium.
EFFECT: method improves the method of sulphate production of titanium dioxide.
