FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to mass-spectrometry. Ion trap contains at least two external electrodes elongated along the longitudinal axis of the trap, and two pairs of internal electrodes elongated along the longitudinal axis of the trap and arranged so that each electrode from one pair touches the electrode of the other pair at least part of its surface.

EFFECT: increased compactness of the mass spectrometer realized on the basis of the possibility of capture and retention of ions created inside the trap, which will allow to avoid use of the additional radio-frequency trap used in the traditional Orbitrap for ion input; configuration of internal electrodes of the disclosed ion trap provides reduced sensitivity to errors in making electrodes.
