FIELD: physics.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to methods of measuring characteristics of a magnetic field and can be used in designing and operating magnetic sensors and magnetometers. Method of measuring magnetic field characteristics consists in placing a diamond crystal with NV centres in the region of the measured magnetic field, on which electromagnetic radiation of the optical range is directed, leading to spin polarization of the NV centres. To said crystal there applied is at least once alternating magnetic field oriented in some pre-set direction. Dependence of the fluorescence signal on the value of the variable magnetic field is measured. Diamond sample is polycrystalline diamond with NV-centres with random orientation of axes. Projection of the measured magnetic field is determined from the position of the single cross-relaxation resonance in the fluorescence signal.

EFFECT: technical result is simple method of measuring characteristics of magnetic field.
