FIELD: manufacturing technology.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of alkylphenol resins which can be converted into high-molecular weight novolac resins, can be converted into thermally cured resol resins, as well as to compositions containing them. Invention describes compositions, methods and resins obtained using alkyl aldehydes and phenols. In one embodiment of the invention, a composition comprising an alkylphenol resin can be obtained by condensing at least one phenol monomer selected from the group consisting of phenol, cresol, resorcinol, xylenol, ethylphenol, alkyl resorcinol and combinations thereof; and at least one alkyl aldehyde with 5–12 carbon atoms in the alkyl group. Alkylphenol resins do not contain monomers of octylphenol or nonylphenol. In one embodiment, the alkylphenol resins can be obtained using formaldehyde, and alternatively, in another embodiment, the alkylphenol resins can be obtained without using formaldehyde.
EFFECT: method of producing said novel alkylphenol resins is a cost-effective method and is easily scaled.
