SUBSTANCE: invention relates to destruction of ice cover for opening of passage through ice field to shipboard equipment for ice breakers. Method of destruction of ice cover is based on use for focusing of laser radiation, divided into N circular zones, focusing of N circular radiation zones is performed with separate spherical focuses F_N, differing by waist length (twice Rayleigh length) L of laser radiation in focuses F_N, arranged in series one after another on one focusing axis to the ice cover splitting depth T.

EFFECT: reduction of equipment composition, increase in density of laser radiation energy distribution along the line of irradiation of ice cover to ice splitting depth, in increase of ice cover splitting speed, in reduction of ice load on ship hull, in expansion of capabilities of method application on vessels of ice breaker class.
