FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing crystalline L-alanine from an aqueous solution of L-alanine, containing at least 100 parts per million in terms of L-alanine of one or more α-amino acids, other than L-alanine. Method includes the following steps: a) providing an aqueous solution of L-alanine containing at least 100 parts per million in terms of L-alanine of one or more α-amino acids, other than L-alanine; b) subjecting the L-alanine crystallisation solution by creating conditions for controlled supersaturation such that the ratio of c:c* concentration of the dissolved L-alanine to the equilibrium solubility of c* L-alanine under conditions of controlled supersaturation ranges from >1:1 to 1.5:1, thus effecting crystallisation of L-alanine; c) recovering crystalline L-alanine from mother fluid. Aqueous solution of L-alanine is fed into a continuously operating crystallization apparatus which contains an aqueous suspension of L-alanine crystals.
EFFECT: disclosed method enables to obtain crystalline L-alanine in form of compact crystals.
